The Auburn School - Silver Spring Campus is an independent day-school offering a specialized program for intellectually engaged students with social and communication challenges. We offer a dynamic educational program for intellectually curious students with challenges in the areas of communication, socialization, pragmatic language, and organization. Position
The Auburn School's Silver Spring campus is actively recruiting a part-time Art Integration teacher for the 2024-2025 school year.
Auburn teachers work in a collaborative environment to implement our unique, integrated academic and social curriculum in a highly professional work environment that brings teachers, social learning specialists and occupational therapists, behaviorists and instructional assistants together on behalf of student success.
The art teacher will provide art instruction to students K-8 to help develop arts skills and intellectual processes providing multiple entry points for students linking to content in other subject areas.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities Include the following. Other duties as assigned.
- Teach knowledge and skills, nurture confidence and character, and meet the needs of all students by utilizing instructional models, strategies, and curriculum
- Use assessment data to modify short and long-term plans to promote all students’ academic performance
- Develop and maintain skill-appropriate lesson plans
- Develop and maintain student forms and files as required by SESI Schools, local, state, and/or federal agencies
- Collaborate with staff to promote an environment of critical thinking and academic rigor
- Drive, record, and track student growth and progress towards goals
- Participate in the daily functions of the school such as morning, lunch, and afternoon supervisory duties.
- Attending and documenting conferences, meetings, and training with supervisors
- Light lifting, walking, and/or climbing stairs may be required
Desired Qualifications
- Bachelors degree required, Masters degree highly preferred
- A minimum of 2 years of experience teaching art in the classroom, preferably in a special education setting Experience with the blending of content and skills between an art form and a co-curricular subject
- Sound understanding of, and sensitivity to, children and adolescents with special learning needs
- Experience with Asperger’s syndrome, organizational issues, ADHD and/or NVLD preferred
- Experience with differentiated and inquiry based instruction, multiage classrooms, behavior management, and assistive learning technologies preferred
- Experience with the Understanding by Design curriculum framework a plus
- Commitment to professional excellence
