Brief Description of Duties
Reporting to the Dean, the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs and Student Success provides decisive leadership for the College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability and Environmental Sciences (CAUSES) at UDC. The position leads the development and execution of academic programs, curriculum design, diverse teaching methodologies, and innovation to drive faculty engagement, academic program accreditation, , and lead the delivery of quality recruitment and retention best practices.
The Associate Dean leads and oversees all student-related matters, including the University's student affairs team, student recruitment, retention, engagement and completion, mental health and wellness, military services, and disability support services. The position is responsible for budget management and supervising CAUSES operations in the absence and at the direction of the Dean. The Associate Dean also works closely with the assistant and other associate deans in CAUSES as a collaborative community of practice to ensure engagement at the highest level is integrated into the college's academic curricula.
The candidate must have an established record of excellence commensurate with appointment as Assistant or Associate Professor in a unit within CAUSES. At a minimum, the selected candidate must be eligible for a faculty appointment, including non-tenure track classifications.
The candidate must be a collaborative team player, work effectively and efficiently with diverse constituencies, perform all duties with a high degree of independence and efficiency, communicate effectively, work well under pressure, and be familiar (or familiarize self) with relevant rules, regulations, policies, and procedures for the position.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Generates reports and analyses pertaining to academic and student affairs, including assessing key performance indicators, budgeting, observations, leading faculty, and adjunct orientation managing adjunct and part-time faculty, and training and development.
- Supervises Department Chairs and unit staff support.
- Leads the planning, management, and support of major academic events such as Dean's list and Honor Society ceremonies, convocations, and commencement.
- Provides academic advising and counseling during peak times, and during enrollment events and other times as needed.
- Addresses student complaints, concerns and complicated advising and counseling issues.
- Addresses academic student suspension and dismissal reinstatement requests, course repeats and overload requests for students on academic probation.
- Serves as a point of contact for campus administrators for troubleshooting matters or providing referrals.
- Leads the academic and student outcomes components of the university’s strategic plan and works with the college assessment specialist to ensure continuous improvement.
- Oversees the efforts in the preparation of accreditation and annual program reviews.
- Works collaboratively with Assistant and Associate Deans to ensure academic programs embed community engagement and land-grant initiatives.
- Other duties as assigned by the Dean.
Required Qualifications
- Terminal degree in any of the disciplines represented in the college or an allied profession.
- Four years of demonstrated successful leadership, including supervisory responsibilities.
- Strong interpersonal skills, excellent verbal, and written communication skills.
- Proven scholarly record consistent with the mission of CAUSES.
- Demonstrated project planning and management, time management, and priority setting skills.
- Demonstrated experience integrating community engagement into undergraduate and graduate courses, curriculum, and co-curricular experiences (or equivalent work experience).
- Demonstrated ability to inspire, motivate, and facilitate the success of others.
