Hospital Laboratory Technicians perform or supervise the performance of a wide variety of technical procedures in a hospital laboratory or other facility directly involved in patient-care activities; and perform other related duties as required.
The Pulmonary Function Technician performs pulmonary function and exercise tests on patients. These tests are used to diagnose and manage disease in patients. The pulmonary function technician also participates in research projects that require pulmonary function or exercise testing as an evaluation criterion.
The major portion of the duties of the pulmonary function technician includes instructing and properly coaching patients to perform very demanding and “effort-dependent” breathing tests, independently and under minimal supervision, sometimes on very ill patients. The pulmonary function technician must learn all of the various measurements of lung function in order to generate reproducible and accurate results. An important factor required to perform the testing is the ability to fully understand the technical aspects of the equipment, as well as comprehend various computerized hardware and software applications. Following a variety of detail-specific protocols is critical to the success of this position.
