Job Overview
The Assistant CAD Designer is responsible for all aspects of CAD Design including the development of prints, color combinations, stripes, graphics, embellishments, jacquards, and plaids for each season. This position will support the Senior CAD Designer/Senior Designer in developing and executing a strategic vision, with a progressive, customer-centric approach while delivering on sales and profit objectives. This role requires leveraging technical expertise to identify opportunities and develop an assortment. Fundamental requirements include collaborating, taking ownership of your business, and achieving results. Candidates must be comfortable with quickly evaluating and sun-setting legacy approaches that no longer align with the strategy. The ideal candidate will be known for both vision and an equally strong orientation for speed, organization, & accuracyders and acts as a strategic consultant, delivering high-quality, actionable outputs.
What You Will Do
- Assist Senior CAD Designer/Senior Designer on trend research for Seasonal Prep + Concept milestone meetings, specifically for print, colorways, embellishments, graphics, & any new ornamental treatments
- Assist Senior CAD Designer/Senior Designer on decisions made on in-season print/pattern changes to make for the department and vendors based on sales, margin, and turn forecast in partnership with Product Development and Buying Team
- Support team in strategic meetings with recommended print/pattern assortments (Key Resources, Design, Team Management)
- Assist in identifying the key print/patterns that comprise each classification
- Adhere to the seasonal time and action calendar for area of responsibility
- Assist Senior CAD Designer/Senior Designer with the design and development of colorway, prints, and fabric simulations (such as wovens, knits, & foils)
- Re-color and design prints, jacquards, embroidery, embellishments, yarn dyes, and graphics
- Scan and clean up prints to assist vendors on executing to proper number of screens
- Assist with creating proper repeats of patterns
- Create pitches and supply print and color chips for development packages
- Prepare print boards/set-up for presentations and market
- Assist in designing graphics for prints, logos, etc.
- Assist with designs “companion” prints
- Competitive shop for trend and research development
- Maintain & organize the file structure within their brand for both external and internal partners (SharePoint & PLM)
- Processing and saving print studio files
- Maintain an industry presence that allows for connections, new business opportunities, and ideas at Macy’s. Represent and support the Macy’s brand while maintaining this presence and building relationships.
- Communicate extensively with design and product teams.
- Collaborate with Vendor Community (Overseas/Domestic).
- Communicate regularly with design & product management teams to gather input and share print/pattern development direction.
- Communicate daily with overseas offices to share print/pattern development information.
- Assist Senior CAD Designer/Senior Designer in selecting and approving patterns, scale, and colors.
- Use design software programs for style, color, and pattern development.
- Identify any print opportunities and provide suggestions.
- Regular, dependable attendance & punctuality.
Skills You Will Need
Design Experience: Preferred qualifications include a Bachelor's degree in Fashion Design or Fine Arts, experience in retail or design internships, and 0-3 years of direct experience.
Retail Industry Knowledge: Passion for and knowledge of the retail industry, including reading fashion magazines and industry publications such as WWD. Experience in apparel, footwear, accessories, or home retailing is a plus.
Organization and Attention to Detail: Good organizational skills with a keen eye for detail.
Project Management: Proficient in project and process management, capable of effectively managing workload, priorities, and timelines.
Communication Skills: Excellent written and oral communication skills. Ability to think analytically and pragmatically.
Initiative and Problem-Solving: Self-starter with strong problem-solving skills and the ability to take initiative.
Interpersonal Skills: Excellent interpersonal skills, fostering effective collaboration and teamwork. Considered a true team player.
