Uses oxyacetylene and various types of electric welding equipment. Performs sidewall cuts. Interprets construction drawings for dimensions, angles, offsets, connections and material specifications. Makes field layout sketches and performs shop calculations. Works on active high- and low-pressure plant piping, gas piping and steel structures, and repairs street equipment. Repair materials or equipment that is other than carbon steel by brazing. Welds on gas mains when internal or external alignment clamps are required instead of backing rings. Performs appropriate pressure tests on fittings and mains. Follows safe working practices to prevent injuries, fire, or explosions that could result from welding operations. Installs barriers and shields to protect other employees and public against eye injury from flash. Sets up and operates equipment for drilling, tapping and stopping off gas mains and services. Makes repairs to pipelines and pipe coatings as required by Pipeline/ Distribution Integrity. Operates Company passenger cars, trucks, and mobile plant equipment. Operates specialized fabrication equipment such as band saw, drill press, iron worker and pipe roller. Notes: Is required to work during emergencies and subject to working night shifts. Performs other job-related duties as assigned, including working with Gas M&R and Construction Crews. Required to pass Company test for proficiency in electric butt and fillet welding of steel and pipe, working in all positions; and a Company test for proficiency in fusing plastic gas pipe. Periodic requalification testing is required. Frequently works at heights and in confined spaces. May work in heavy dust and under extreme temperature conditions. Often works in deep trenches, on or near pressurized gas mains and near vehicular traffic. May assist Pipeline Mechanics with tapping, stopping, cutting capping mains and services above 2 inch. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education/ Experience: Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent Over four years' experience as a welder. Ability to interpret construction drawings and diagrams. Ability to meet and maintain Company driving standards. Must possess valid drivers' license. Ability to obtain and maintain a Commercial Driver's License and notify the company of changes impacting ability to drive. This position is considered a safety sensitive function and may be subject to DOT drug and alcohol testing. Must complete and maintain certification in Welding Procedures as determined by the company Must satisfy respirator qualifications and be clean shaven per OSHA Standards Must complete all required Operator Qualification Training and maintain recertifications as required. Demonstrated ability to write, speak, read, comprehend and communicate clearly and accurately in the English language. Must be willing and able to work overtime on a regular basis and must be available for callout overtime, rotating shifts and /or night shifts if and when required, consistent with the Labor Agreement.
