The Product Development Engineer in this role will focus on performance understanding and optimization for TaylorMade drivers, fairway woods and hybrids. This position will require a variety of skills and tools to analyze, test, design, and prototype modifications of existing designs and new concepts that will feed into the product development of our next generation products. These skills will include 3-D CAD modeling with Creo/Pro-E, FEA, hands-on testing, DOE, and statistical analysis, along with critical thinking and fast-paced problem solving.
Essential Functions and Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and collaborate on thinking around why and how our products work to deliver desired performance.
- Connect with partners in Research, Advanced Design, Tour and Product Development teams to share/learn current know-how and phenomenology and to plan/brainstorm studies, experiments and future tests.
- Use Hypermesh and ABAQUS to conduct advanced FEA.
- Test with curiosity using in-house lab capability and engaging in field product testing of our metalwood protoypes and competitor clubs.
- Utilize CAD skills (Creo/ProE) to create design iterations, fixtures, and prototypes to explore variables which drive performance in our products.
- Collaborate within the team and department cross-functionally to analyze data, create test plans, DOEs, and gain performance understanding. Communicate progress and hand off learnings to downstream teams and to R&D stakeholders.
- Support our IP team in activity related to patent filing, patent prosecution, and clearance.
- Support our Tour, Marketing, and Manufacturing teams as needed to facilitate successful Tour and Product launches and production qualification.
- Continually develop better and faster ways of executing the core functions of the role using modern tools, techniques, and technology.
Knowledge and Skills Requirements:
- Strong knowledge and experience utilizing engineering fundamentals and testing methods to achieve goals.
- Knowledge of Finite Element Analysis (Hyperworks, Abaqus or equivalent software packages)
- Experience in critical data analysis and statistical thinking (Hypothesis testing, Design of Experiments approaches (DOE))
- Knowledge of CAD (Pro-E, Creo or equivalent software package) and Windchill PDM systems.
- General experience and knowledge of materials (carbon and stainless steels, titanium and aluminum alloys, polymers, and composites)
- General experience and knowledge of manufacturing methods and processes (investment casting, forging, machining, stamping, etching, welding, coating, bonding, injection molding, etc.)
- Strong communication skills and collaboration mentality; have excellent interpersonal skills; ability to communicate effectively with all levels of the organization (e.g. marketing, sales, product creation, engineering, production, Tour reps (sports marketing), technicians, etc.)
- Fluent in English (written and oral)
- Various analytical skills and software experience is preferred. (Matlab, Minitab, Life Data Analysis)
- Knowledge of golf principles and associated terminology highly preferred.
- Golf playing skills (single digit handicap) is highly preferred to evaluate and test product.
Education, Work Experience, and Professional Certifications:
- BS degree in Mechanical Engineering (Masters degree preferred).
- 5-8 years in Product Development, Design and testing, Analysis experience directly related to above responsibilities
- Experience in setting up and designing tests, testing equipment and fixtures with a “hands-on” mentality
Work Environment / Physical Requirements:
- Normal office environment; heavy phone and computer usage
- Ability to work extended hours as necessary
- Occasional domestic and international travel required
- Light physical effort equal to frequent lifting or moving of lightweight materials
TaylorMade is a performance driven organization and our total rewards approach to compensation is designed to support this. We consider many factors in determining base compensation, including position scope, job related knowledge, education, skills, experience, and work location. The expected annual base pay range for this position is $105,000 - $115,000. Additional benefits, such as health & wellness, performance bonuses, product discounts, holidays, paid time off, etc. may also be offered in accordance with our plans.
