Responsibilities
This role reporting to the President of Berkley Specialty Excess will focus on leading the development and implementation of a specialized environmental commercial small business line of business for the organization. Candidate will lead a team of environmental underwriters in the strategic direction of the underwriting platform, business development, marketing strategies, rating, guidelines development and audit procedures while maintaining a focus on profitability. In addition, this role will provide a key liaison role with underwriting operations, claims, actuarial (pricing and reserving), finance and other functional support roles.
Support and actively underwrite/originate and service new and renewal business.
Responsible for the overall management, business development, analysis and monitoring of an excess book of business.
Work closely with other Berkley organizations to develop sources of business
Ensure business is focused on proactively hedging market conditions while developing the highest possible profit.
Engaging in the business planning and setting strategy for the unit.
Provide input on the ongoing refinement of metrics utilized to evaluate underwriting of individual accounts relative to the portfolio of risk.
Development and management of business - broker/agent relationships.
Adherence to Berkley Specialty Excess underwriting guidelines and referral compliance.
Participates in all internal company training and continuing education.
Remain current on new product opportunities as it pertains to market trends, appetite, and risk.
Stays abreast and knowledgeable on market trends in terms of forms, coverage, and appetite to maintain competitiveness.
Leverage skills and expertise outside of desk responsibilities, including participation in marketing/public speaking events.
Additional Responsibilities include:
Provide support to the underwriting audit process.
Support the drafting of policy language and coordinate with claims and legal to finalize wording.
Act as a role model promoting company brand and culture.
Assist with special projects and tasks, as directed by the President.
Qualifications
Minimum of 15 years of commercial insurance underwriting experience, preferably in E&S markets.
Technical knowledge of general casualty liability lines of coverage.
Brokerage experience a plus.
Experience with environmental underwriting, contractual wording, rating methodologies, financial analysis, and policy structure.
Mentorship and Training experience.
Research and project management experience.
Education Requirement
Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent insurance experience required
