Job Description

The Washington Post is seeking a creative, knowledgeable editor to lead coverage of science news, shepherding journalism that inspires awe and wonder while holding to account the researchers and officials whose decisions affect policy and our understanding of the world around us.

This editor will be one of two deputy editors on the National department’s Health and Science team. We expect this editor to preside over short-term stories that impart revelations about Earth and space, as well as more ambitious pieces that set the standard for science journalism that resonates deeply because of its clarity and ability to render complex subjects in compelling narratives. This editor may also be responsible for news and enterprise stories on health and related topics the team covers. Collegiality is paramount, and this editor will be expected to forge connections with desks across the newsroom whose work touches on science, including working collaboratively to execute visually compelling journalism.

Responsibilities:

• Drive coverage that builds on The Post’s legacy of science journalism and sets the standard for reporting that is urgent, accessible and sweeping.

• Embrace The Post’s commitment to watchdog and accountability journalism that explores the nexus between science, politics, money and ambition.

• Manage reporters. Help them set priorities on busy beats, identify ambitious and relevant targets and hone their craft.

• Edit stories to the highest standards. Sharpen and elevate copy on deadline while also ensuring fairness, rigor, precision and excellence in story framing.

• Make sound decisions about sourcing, story construction and other?editorial matters.

• Collaborate with?editors and reporters on the Health and Science team and with journalists on The Post’s Business, Climate and Well+Being teams to provide the most comprehensive and visually dynamic coverage. Seek opportunities to work with other desks on stories that reveal how science touches every aspect of life.

• Execute journalism in various story formats, with a commitment to collaborating with journalists from the Audio, Design, Graphics, Photo and Video departments, and with visual enterprise editors.

• Edit with the reader in mind. Publish stories when readers are interested and at appropriate lengths. Optimize stories for digital success and embrace creative storytelling to identify the most compelling and accessible formats.

Preferred qualifications:

• At least 10 years of professional journalism experience and a track record of editing and/or reporting with distinction. 

• Experience understanding the complexities of science news and making that knowledge accessible to a broad audience.

• Familiarity with major lines of scientific research, the institutes where that work happens and the journals that publish the results.

• Demonstrated skill at working with visual journalists and thinking deeply about the digital presentation of science news.

• Exceptional communication and organizational skills.

• Supervisory experience is a plus but not required.
