The Prince George's County Office of Human Resources Management is seeking qualified applicants to fill a Background Investigator position, grade G21, within its Background and Compliance Division.
About the Position:
This is a full-performance position where the incumbent will be responsible for conducting comprehensive background investigations on applicants selected for civilian positions, case management activities, and compiling and maintaining accurate statistical data. The incumbent may be required to work evenings and weekends to meet recruitment initiatives and deadlines. The incumbent will be evaluated for effectiveness, timeliness, and efficiency in completing background investigations. The incumbent will treat all background files, criminal history checks, reference statements, and any other information compiled during the background process as confidential.
Examples of Work
What You'll Do:
Perform comprehensive background investigations in accordance with the Maryland Correctional Training Commission’s standards, Personnel Law and Administration Procedures, the Office of Human Resources Management (OHRM) protocols, department policies and procedures, and applicable County, State, and Federal laws
Schedule interviews with candidates to review, gather, verify, and analyze information and documents submitted with the Personal History Statement (PHS)
Assist applicants in completing required forms and documents
Record legible fingerprints using an Identix Fingerscan machine and submit to the State of Maryland and FBI
Conduct interviews virtually or by phone with candidates' current or previous employers, co-workers, neighbors, and personnel references and perform in person on-site field visits when deemed appropriate and accurately document interview statements on appropriate forms
Maintain positive relationships and communication with candidates throughout the background process
Prepare detailed reports of investigations and findings of applicants in the background process
Assign cases in accordance with established priorities; manage applicants’ preliminary data in the County’s electronic tracking system; move candidates through the background process
Manage applicant case reviews to ensure fair, thorough, and timely reports accurately reflecting all investigative efforts and suitability recommendations
Compile and maintain statistical data on each applicant throughout the background process, from preliminary screening to case file completion, including demographical information and applicant statuses
May be required to travel to investigation sites
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree in programs involving investigative and social relations skills such as criminology, law enforcement, business or public administration, one of the social sciences or related fields; or an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledges, skills and abilities.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience conducting and managing comprehensive employment background investigative cases
Experience using Microsoft Office products such as Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams, SharePoint, and Adobe products such as Adobe Acrobat Pro and Adobe Acrobat Sign

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Upon selection, the candidate must:
Must pass a background screening
Must pass a drug screening and TB test
Must be willing to travel to conduct on-site reference checks, when appropriate
Must have a valid driver's license
Must be able to work evenings or weekends as needed
Meet all training and performance standards and demonstrate proficiency as required by the agency
Participate as an "Essential" employee in the department's program and other emergency or special activities as assigned.
DURATION OF ELIGIBILITY: Candidates will be selected from a temporary register of eligible candidates, which will become effective approximately four (4) weeks after the closing date. Once a selection has been made, the register will expire.
