THE POSITION
This Associate Engineer position is assigned to the Public Works Department, Mobility and Traffic Engineering Division. Associate Engineer's assigned to work in the City’s Mobility and Traffic Engineering Division, manage Capital Improvement Projects (CIP), including engineering consultants, supplier, technical service and general contractor contracts. Under supervision, the successful candidate must exhibit excellent verbal and written communication skills and be capable of chairing meetings and making presentations to commissions, community groups, as well as other public agencies. Prepares both technical and non-technical reports requiring minimal supervision. Interprets and correctly applies the City’s standards and enforces conformance to the City development requirements on the part of contractors and consulting engineers. Provides guidance and information regarding permits and processes to meet established mandates. Efficiently uses word-processing and spreadsheet programs to support contract administration and presentations and as a means of communicating engineering related information. Prepares, designs, drafts, and quality controls engineering designs for public works construction projects by gathering and compiling data, calculating and balancing traverses from field notes, designing plans, profiles, and making cross sections, horizontal and curve computations, and establishing grades. Reviews private civil engineering development plans. Assures the development is designed and will be constructed in accordance with City and State legal requirements and conforms to professional engineering design practices. Performs other related duties.
Training and Experience: Any combination equivalent to training and experience that could likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be: Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited college or university and four (4) years experience in Civil Engineering at a level comparable to Assistant Engineer. Preferred candidates must demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills, and have knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel programs.
Licenses and Certificates: Valid driver's license is required at time of appointment (hire). Registration as a licensed California Civil Engineer (PE) or Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certificate is highly desirable.
EXAMINATION PROCEDURES
Applicants must receive a passing score on all examination components in order to be placed on the eligible list.
COMPONENTS
Written Test (weighted at 40%): To determine knowledge of public works administrative and engineering skills and the ability to write. Tentatively scheduled for week of June 24, 2024. Appraisal Interview (weighted at 60%): To evaluate oral presentation skills and training, experience and personal qualifications. Tentatively scheduled for week of July 8, 2024.
