Job Abstract

Join a team of dedicated railroaders to provide vital maintenance and services to trains, so they can continue to serve Union Pacific customers across North America! As a Mechanical Service Operator, you’ll be responsible for everything from stocking locomotives with necessary materials to cleaning assigned areas to help operate locomotives in shop and service areas. On this vital team, you’ll become familiar with all functions of the shop environment and will gain a big-picture understanding of Union Pacific's mechanical operations! Restock locomotives with all necessary materials, including drinking water, sand, and spare parts Clean interiors and exteriors of locomotives including floors, parts, and engine car body Perform air brake tests and inspect materials, equipment, and machinery for any defects or unsafe conditions Operate locomotives between various shop locations, service tracks, and switching areas, and line switches and operate derails to assist hostlers Safely and effectively operate shop machines and tools, which may include forklifts, backhoes, bobcats, mobile cranes or high-pressure steam cleaning equipment Communicate effectively with team members via hand radio and hand signals on service track and other areas Take initiative, make meaningful contributions, be open to change, and take responsibility for the quality and timely completion of one's tasks Ensure compliance with all rules and regulations for safety and operations Ensure the safety of self and co-workers Develop and maintain positive working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, contractors and/or customers and effectively handle controversy Perform other duties as assigned

Able to effectively work independently and in group settings Able to perform basic arithmetic operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and conversion of fractions into decimals and decimals into fractions to solve practical problems Able to extract relevant information from tables, charts, graphs, and text Valid driver's license Able to understand and apply safety rules, practice safe work habits, identify safety risks and avoid potentially risky behaviors and situations Mechanical experience understanding and applying basic mechanical principles to solve mechanical problems Experience with computers and basic keyboarding skills Proficient verbal and written communication skills to deliver information to coworker(s) and supervisor(s) Experience reading and understanding instructions (examples may include: operating and safety rules, bulletins, special instructions, and federal regulatory documents) Candidates for this position must pass a pre-employment test in English before being allowed to interview.
