Job Summary
Sets up Farmers' Market Traffic Control Plan (TCP) at the City’s farmers’ markets; sets up farmers' market program equipment, signage and event booths at all four markets. Provides customer service, support to management staff and general assistance in support of the Farmers' Market program. Troubleshoots and repairs equipment and supplies.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Works under the administrative supervision of the Farmers’ Market Supervisor and/or designee, who provides detailed work assignments, reviews work in progress and upon completion.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
Trains and coordinates the activities of temporary staff and volunteers, as required.
Representative Duties
Sets up and takes down a variety of traffic control devices consistent with a TCP at the City’s farmers’ markets. Uses a power cart caddy to position 1,500 pound carts at market entrances. Follows TCP set up plan and market layout including fire lanes and handicap access.
Sets up staff and vendor booths and public seating areas in a variety of configurations at each market site consistent with market operations and requirements of the Los Angeles County Department of Health.
Runs power cables, water hookups and pedestrian safety covers.
Performs maintenance and repair of farmers’ market equipment or refers problems to appropriate staff. Troubleshoots and reports incidences of wear and tear of TCP devices and other farmers’ market equipment such as electrical outlets, hot water heaters and water pumps.
Provides general assistance duties in support of the farmers’ market program, including but not limited to sales of market promotional items, food benefit voucher transactions, and providing customer service and information about market programs and vendor application processes.
Follows all applicable safety rules and regulations.
Performs other related duties, as assigned.
Requirements
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:
Knowledge of:
City of Santa Monica’s Farmers’ Market policies and procedures.
TCPs and other related traffic and safety control measures.
Event layout and set up procedures.
Basic equipment and vehicle maintenance.
Safe work practices and procedures.
Effective customer services techniques.
Ability to:
Read and interpret charts, event layouts and traffic control plans.
Train and oversee the work of temporary employees.
Operate equipment such as hand held radios, power cart caddies, and hand & power tools.
Organize, prioritize and perform work with attention to detail.
Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Explain rules and regulations to vendors and customers.
Perform physical labor for sustained periods of time.
Establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with City employees and the general public.

Skill in:
Working effectively with others.
Education, Training and Experience:
Graduation from high school or the equivalent.
Two years of recent, paid and progressively responsible work experience assisting at large scale public events which included physical work, deployment of traffic control plans and extensive interaction with the public.
License and Certificates:
Possession of a valid class C driver license. Ability to obtain Red Cross CPR and First Aid certificates within six months of date of hire.
Supplemental Information
This is a temporary hourly position without benefits. The City Of Santa Monica provides a deferred compensation (457) retirement plan for its as-needed (temporary) employees who are not eligible for coverage under the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS). The City and as-needed employee are each required to contribute 3.75% of wages to the deferred compensation plan. As-needed employee contributions will be deducted from paychecks on a pre-tax basis.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is performed primarily outdoors in seasonal climate and weather conditions. Work requires exposure to dust, wind, noise and occasionally unsanitary conditions. Physical demands include working in cramped spaces, lifting objects weighing up to 60 pounds, pushing, pulling, standing, kneeling, bending, reaching and grasping. Will be required to work evenings and or weekends and holidays.
