EL MONTE CITY SCHOOL DISTRICT POSITION DESCRIPTION
Position: Custodian I
Department:Custodial Department FLSA: Non-Exempt
Reports To: Head Custodian Pay Grade: 9
SUMMARY
Performs routine custodial and grounds cleanup at school and related facilities.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the first level in the Custodial series, requiring some prior experience but no formal training. Advancement to Custodian II or higher positions will require completion of the District’s probation period (at least 1 year on the job), a demonstrated ability to function independently with general instructions or work orders, and the ability to perform light maintenance.
ESSENTIAL TYPES OF DUTIES (Examples)
·Sweeps, scrubs mops, washes, and polishes floors. Washes windows, counters, and walls. Vacuums rugs and carpets. Dusts and polishes furniture and woodwork. Cleans chalkboards and erasers. Empties pencil sharpeners.
·Maintains and makes minor repairs to buildings and fixtures. Reports other repair and maintenance needs and assists others in making repairs.
·Cleans, scrubs and disinfects restrooms. Polishes metal work, cleans sinks, mirrors, and other restroom fixtures. Maintains various classroom and restroom supplies including paper towels, soap, toilet paper, and related items.
·Empties and cleans waste receptacles. Picks up paper. Picks up trash containers and empties into large bins.
·May move furniture and equipment, set up meeting rooms, classrooms, and other school facilities for special meeting and events.
·Turns lights on and off. Unlocks and locks doors and gates. Washes walks and eating areas. Cleans drinking fountains
·Check doors, windows, and assigned area for vandalism. Reports safety sanitary, and fire hazards.
·May be required to perform the duties of Head Custodian on an infrequent basis.
·Performs other duties as assigned to accomplish the objectives of the position.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge and Skills: Requires general knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in custodial care and routine facilities maintenance. Must have a good knowledge of work hazards and safety procedures. Requires some knowledge of chemical reactions.
Abilities: Must be able to perform all of the essential duties of the position with limited supervision. Must be able to maintain tools and equipment in a working condition. Requires the ability to learn the layout and requirements of the assigned area. Requires the ability to perform routine maintenance tasks and to be able to determine when to refer more complex maintenance requirements to a supervisor. Must be able communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Must be able to follow oral and written directions.
Physical Abilities: Requires the ability to walk, bend, stoop and perform repetitive arm and shoulder motions with moderate exertion. Must lift light to medium weight materials or equipment up to 50 pounds on a frequent basis, over 50 pounds on an occasional basis. Requires the ability to operate and maneuver demanding equipment such as floor polishers, carpet cleaners, and extension window cleaners. Requires visual acuity and depth perception to operate equipment and read safety materials.
Education and/or Experience Reading and writing skills sufficient to perform duties and read and understand MSDS sheets required. Prior custodial experience preferred.
Licenses and Certificates: Requires valid California Driver’s License.

Regular Floor Care Team schedule is Wednesday through Friday: 2:30 PM to 11 PM and Saturday and Sunday: 6:30 AM to 3 PM
For training purposes, the schedule for the beginning of employment may be Monday through Friday.
The date for beginning of Wednesday through Sunday schedule is TBD.
Possible summer work schedule to be Monday through Friday.
Incumbent must be willing and able to work flexible hours in order to meet the needs of the department. Must be available to work as a substitute custodian anytime (between 6 AM and 10:30 PM) at various school sites.
