DESCRIPTION
The Department of Library Services has an immediate opening for one (1) at -will, unclassified part-time, Public Health Associate III. Under the supervision of a Senior Librarian the incumbent will assists in the development, implementation, and evaluation of mental health library programs for teens at neighborhood libraries. The Public Health Associate III will provide services and activities focused on the mental health of youth between the ages of 12-24 in a public library setting. This position is located at the Billie Jean King Main Library, located at 200 W. Broadway, Long Beach, CA 90802.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Facilitates library programs for teens that have a focus on mental health, wellness, and self-care such as art therapy, book clubs, and mental health first aid;
Works with Teen Services Librarians to help create well-rounded mental health collections for teens at neighborhood libraries;
Provides drop-in “office hours” for teens and parents to share mental health information and resources;
Disseminates mental health information to staff and the public;
Connects teens and their families to partner organizations that offer wraparound services as needed.
Performs other related duties as required.
REQUIREMENTS TO FILE
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
High school diploma or equivalent
Four (4) years full-time professional experience in a specialized public health setting, such as social work, registered nursing, nutrition, phlebotomy, physician's assistance, chemistry, clinical technology or public health GIS. Education may be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis*
A valid driver's license or the ability to arrange necessary and timely transportation for field travel may be required for some assignments.

Must be available to work evenings and weekends;
Excellent organization skills;
Ability to work, adapt, and supervise in a changing library environment;
Ability to effectively evaluate and utilize the Internet, online databases, and computer software;
Experience working with teen and emerging adult population;
Experience working with health education programs; and,
Experience creating program curriculum and documentation

Ability to ensure the library space is welcoming to all, and patrons are following library rules
Ability to learn, interpret, retain, and communicate complex information
Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
Strong interpersonal and communication skills

Ability to maintain accurate records and files
Ability to work effectively with a variety of people by consistently exercising tact, good judgment, and a proactive, problem-solving communication style
Ability to work independently or as part of a team
Ability to operate office equipment, including computers, printers, and copiers
