Examples of Duties
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: • Receives, sorts, arranges, alphabetizes and files materials; retrieves materials and information from files as requested. • Compiles, assembles, collates and reproduces lists, grades, figures, reports, agendas and other materials. • Provides factual information regarding department or school matters to others over the telephone or in person. • Schedules appointments as necessary. • Types and proofreads from oral directions, rough draft copy or notes as well as from a wide variety of materials such as letters, memos, records, and reports. • Posts data to student and departmental records. • Opens, sorts, and distributes mail. • Assists in compiling attendance records, verifying absences, registering students and handling record transfers. • Confer with public agencies regarding student's status. • May update specialized files such as student records, psychological or medical histories. • May do some simple posting of fiscal records. • May inventory, order, check and store office supplies. • Performs job related duties as assigned.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: This is the entry level class in the Clerk series. Incumbents receive work which provides an opportunity to learn the terminology, processes and equipment of an office. Positions assigned to this class usually serve as assistants to higher level clerical personnel performing tasks which are less difficult and more routine than those assigned to the Clerk II class. Changes in procedure or new tasks are explained in detail, and new or unusual situations are referred to the supervisor. Positions in this class may have considerable contact with students and teachers, but are not expected to have extensive knowledge of the procedures and policies of their unit.
