Strong leader needed for a nationally recognized recovery program! This is an exciting opportunity to play a key leadership and collaboration role in delivering recovery-focused services at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center (ADC). The STAR (Striving to Achieve Recovery) Program is peer-led specialized substance use disorder recovery housing unit in the ADC operated in partnership with the Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board (CSB) and Fairfax County Sheriff’s Office.
This position leads a team of peer recovery specialists delivering group and individual peer services five days per week. These services are focused on educating and supporting participants to lead a life of recovery during their incarceration and preparing for a successfully living in the community. The team also provides limited peer support for the general population and may deliver select services in other settings as needed.
We seek someone with knowledge and experience in behavioral health services, especially for justice-involved populations. They should have a strong knowledge of principles of substance use recovery, multiple pathways to recovery, and an ability to relate to participants. Reliability and the ability to work on diverse teams are crucial for success. This position leads out in cultivating a recovery environment, ensuring participants are supported in making self-determined plans for recovery and carrying out those plans. Much of the leadership work consists of providing supervision to a team of peer recovery specialists. This includes assigning tasks, ensuring operating procedures are closely adhered to, training, and consultation on challenging situations. In addition, they maintain service quality at a high recovery-centered standard and looks for opportunities for program growth and innovation.
There is daily close partnership with Sheriff’s Office sworn staff, civilian staff, clinical staff, and other partner staff at the ADC. This includes coordination in general operations, problem-solving, planning, and evaluating services. Effective collaboration skills, and ability to work in a multi-disciplinary setting are crucial.
The population of Fairfax County is very diverse where 38.7% of residents speak a language other than English at home (Spanish, Asian/Pacific Islander, Indo-European, and others) and CSB recognizes that staff competence speaking a variety of languages is necessary to meet client needs. We encourage candidate’s bilingual in English and a foreign language to apply. A foreign language skills stipend of up to $1,300/year (full-time) may be given for qualified bi-lingual employees.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree plus four years of professional human services or related work experience.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
- National or Virginia Peer Support Certification (Required)
- DBHDS Peer Recovery Specialist Supervisor Training- required within 3 months of hire
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, a Child Protective Services Registry, and sanction screening to the satisfaction of the employer. A TB screening upon hire and annually thereafter.
This position is emergency/essential services personnel. (Required to report for duty during inclement weather and/or other emergencies).
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- 2+ years of experience working in collaboration with law enforcement.
- 2+ years’ experience providing direct peer recovery services.
- 1+ years’ experience as a supervisor
- Virginia Peer Recovery Specialist 72-hour course Trainer
- 4+ years’ experience facilitating groups.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Visual acuity is required to read data on computer monitor. Ability to operate keyboard driven equipment; lift up to 15 lbs; and communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
