The City of Fairfax Police Department is looking to fill temporary contracts for the position of Police Officer. This temporary contract police officer position is designed to support the Patrol Division or the Community Services Division by supplementing current Patrol staffing or working with the Crisis Response Team (CRT) and will primarily work day work or evening shifts. Highly Qualified candidate(s) will be given an oral interview, a conditional job offer, a background investigation, a polygraph examination, a physical examination and a psychological examination. After successful completion of the process, a final interview with the Chief of Police, or designee, will be scheduled.
Examples Of Duties
Patrol: Performs general duty police work in the protection of life and property through the enforcement of laws and ordinances of the City of Fairfax and the Commonwealth of Virginia. Patrols a designated area of the City to preserve law and order and to prevent and discover the commission of crime; directs traffic and enforces motor vehicle laws. Answers calls for service and complaints involving suspicious and criminal activities, domestic disputes, and other related citizen requests for service. Maintains records, prepares reports, testifies in Court. Performs all other duties as assigned.
Crisis Intervention Officer: Primarily handles mental health related calls for service as part of the multi-disciplinary co-responder team. Assists the CRT clinician and community paramedic with in-home visits and case management of known mental health consumers. Conducts follow-up check-ins to community members experiencing significant grief. Responds to calls for service involving persons in a mental health crisis or substance induced crisis. Pro-actively engages with known mental health consumers throughout the City of Fairfax. Attends court and/or commitment hearings when necessary. Completes case reports and all appropriate paperwork. Serves emergency custody and temporary detention orders in addition to coordination of transportation for those seeking voluntary mental health treatment. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
U.S. Citizen
No felony convictions. Must be of good character and reputation, have a favorable credit record, possess the ability to speak clearly, hear, analyze, understand, and follow complex oral and written instructions.
Virginia Certified Police Officer who is a graduate of a Virginia DCJS Certified Academy.
High School graduate or GED equivalent.
Possession of a valid operator's license.
Eyesight must meet a minimum of 20/20 binocular vision. Corrective glasses may be worn. Uncorrected vision with glasses must be no worse than 20/100 in either eye, corrective soft contact. Must demonstrate successful long term wear of lenses of 6 months minimum for pre-employment examination. Lenses may be worn, uncorrected vision with soft contacts must be no worse than 20/200.
Current Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) certified police officer.
Additional Desirable Qualification:
More than 10 years of police patrol work in Northern Virginia.
DCJS Crisis Intervention Certification.
Ability to communicate effectively in a second language.
Special Certifications and Licenses:
Possession of a valid operator's license
Supplemental Information
Position is considered Temporary and will not be able to work more than twelve months consecutively.
Permitted to work up to 1559 hours in a fiscal year.
