The Department of Environmental Services (DES), Facilities Maintenance Division is seeking an experienced Building Engineer I to perform skilled maintenance and repairs to over 80 medium, large, and complex mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) building systems and equipment. This employee will also monitor over 38 County buildings using multiple computerized building automation control systems to assist with diagnosing malfunctions and problems with MEP, power generating, and life safety systems.
Specific duties include:
Performing skilled preventive and corrective maintenance to standard systems and equipment as per manufacturer's recommendations and record all deficiencies and completed work;
Troubleshooting inoperable or malfunctioning standard HVAC systems, equipment, and Building Automation systems components to ensure operability, including seasonal winterizing/de-winterizing;
Diagnosing systems and performing plumbing repairs including clearing drain traps, snaking drain lines, repairing pipes and replacing plumbing fixtures;
Assessing and repairing electrical systems including electrical outlets, light fixtures, and breakers and other minor electrical repairs;
Responding to all types of emergency service requests to minimize damage to Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing Systems, Power Generating Equipment, Life Safety Systems, including coordinating connection of emergency roll-up generators;
Providing shift coverage at County facilities, including the Justice Center, as needed and during emergency situations;
Providing contractor oversight to inspect corrective and preventative maintenance tasks performed ensuring that work has been completed as required;
Assisting bureau leadership in assessing existing equipment and providing recommendations and input to the Capital Improvement Plan; and
Performing other job-related duties as assigned.
The ideal candidate will be able to perform in a fast-paced work environment where accurate and quick troubleshooting and diagnosing of system issues is required. The ideal candidate will be customer-oriented, a dependable team member, will have carpentry knowledge and skills to correctly repair building systems and components, and will have previous experience in an environment with varied building portfolios.
Selection Criteria
Minimum:
High school/GED/ vocational/trade school; and
Three (3) years of experience in commercial buildings or a similarly complex environment in more than one of the following areas: plumbing, electrical, emergency management, power equipment, generators and/or general mechanical repairs.
Desirable: Preference may be given to candidates with experience or licensure/certifications in one or more of the following:
Performing maintenance, diagnosing and repairs to mechanical, electrical, plumbing and building maintenance systems;
Diagnosing malfunctioning power generating and life safety systems;
Working in an environment with varied building portfolios;
Working with mobile maintenance devices to receive and complete work orders; and
Using computerized building automation control systems (BAS).
Possession of one or more of the following Licenses/Certificationspreferred:
Journeyman or Master Electrician License(s);
HVAC-R (VA Licensure);
Universal Refrigerant Recovery License; and
CFC Universal, ARC Flash, or Confined Space Certifications.
Special Requirements
Certification Requirement: Must obtain and maintain a ARC Flash and Confined Space certifications within 12 month probationary period.
Background Check: An offer of employment WILL be contingent upon a favorable pre-hire background check. It may include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, and credit history. You will be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.
Driver License: Applicant must possess, or obtain by time of appointment, a valid driver license. The applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain, or they must provide a copy of official driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon a favorable review of the driving record.
Work Environment: Exposure to draft, noise, dust, grease and dirt with extended periods of standing, walking, bending and lifting light to heavy objects and equipment weighing up to 50 lbs. Personal protective equipment may be required. May perform work indoors depending upon assignment.
Additional Information
Work Hours: 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday to Friday, Tuesday to Saturday every 10 weeks, or some other variation/rotation based upon departmental need. Also requires flexibility to work shifts other than normal shift to provide coverage to Justice Center.
Employee must be available for call-back and be willing to work after normal duty hours in emergency situations.
