About the Position
DESCRIPTION Under general direction, this position will coordinate the City’s Transit Services Division programs and performs related duties as assigned. The position also may perform other Recreation Coordinator duties as required. This is a full-time position and may be required to work a variety of hours including, days, evenings and weekends.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS This classification is considered part of the Recreation Coordinator series of positions; however, it is distinguished by its specific responsibilities related to the coordination of transportation infrastructure and community service activities.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED Works under the general supervision of a department director or designated supervisor.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED Provides oversight to part time staff.

Schedules, organizes, coordinates and implements transit programs, workshops and special events; prepares schedule of events and secures necessary personnel, equipment and materials for program activities.
Monitors and supervises transit program participants.
Maintains established guidelines for effective and safe programs; assists in assessment of community needs and recommends improvements to current, programs and events; provides input to department budget;
Provides work direction to part-time staff and volunteers; recruits, trains and evaluates staff and volunteers.
Meets with a variety of community groups, governmental and private agencies to obtain services, programs and support; communicates plans, policies and procedures to various groups and the general public; resolves patron problems according to established guidelines.
Prepares publicity releases, reports, brochures and general promotions of programs; purchases program supplies and equipment, and is responsible for inventory control; prepares and maintains a variety of records including attendance, registration, incidents and equipment use records.
Conducts research on a variety of transportation related issues and prepares written and oral reports; opens and closes facilities; schedules and prepares facilities and recreation areas for use.
Performs routine custodial work as needed.
May collect fees and register patrons for transportation programs and activities.
Administers first aid and CPR, as needed.
May be assigned other Recreation Coordinator duties.
Minimum & Desirable Qualifications
Training and Experience Completion of two years of college with courses in physical education, recreation, social services, gerontology or related field and three years of experience in transportation work is required. Possession of an American Red Cross First Aid Certificate and CPR Certificate are required. Possession of or ability to obtain a California Class C driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record is required at the time of employment and throughout employment is required. English/Spanish bilingual skills are highly desirable.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Theories, principles and practices of transportation, Metro bus sales, and Dial A Ride programs; techniques and methods of planning and organizing group activities; skills and equipment used; public relations and marketing techniques; principles and practices of customer service and public contact; principles of supervision, training and performance evaluation; first aid methods and safety practices. Ability to: schedule, organize and implement transit programs with groups and individuals of all ages; analyze, interpret and explain department policies and procedures; conduct research and prepare and present reports; maintain accurate records; work independently with little direction; plan and organize work to meet deadlines; exercise sound judgment; deal constructively with conflict and develop effective resolutions; supervise assigned staff; meet the public in situations requiring diplomacy and tact; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.

California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Pull Notice System
An incumbent appointed to this position is subject to enrollment in the California DMV Pull Notice Program. The Pull Notice Program provides information on the incumbent’s driving record and Driver’s License status on a periodic basis to the City of South Gate. An employee assigned a City vehicle must acknowledge receipt and understanding of City Administrative Regulations covering the use of City vehicles.

Employment Eligibility List:The Employment Eligibility List will be established after completion of the examination process. Current and future vacancies will be filled from this list. Lists typically last for 12 months, but may be extended or abolished in accordance with the City's Civil Service rules and regulations.
