General Overview: The primary role of the MLL Specialist is to oversee MLL/ELL best practices across schools to ensure scholar needs are met and to build capacity of school teams to implement MLL instructional best practices. The MLL Specialist collaborates with school leadership, teachers, social workers, and operational staff in meeting the instructional needs of all MLL/ELL scholars, including mandated programs, services, and accommodations. They partner with the MLL Senior Specialist and Directors of Special Services to build a vision for strong bilingual programming at Democracy Prep and work to make that vision come to life.
Who You Are:
- An expert in MLL/ELL instruction, with an understanding of and insight around English Language Learner policies under federal and state law
- An experienced teacher who has worked with English Language Learners and has knowledge and understanding of curriculum modifications, instructional best practices, and interventions
- A leader with a vision for instructional excellence for MLL/ELL students
- A constant learner with strong time management and follow-up skills and a demonstrated ability to take initiative, inspire, motivate, and coach others, and handle multiple projects concurrently
- A self-reflective and self-aware teammate who is dedicated to aligning their work with Democracy Prep's commitment to antiracism and who is eager to use these skills to contribute to a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- An excellent communicator, with demonstrated ability to speak and write clearly and persuasively to a variety of stakeholders
- A tech-literate educator with the ability to quickly learn and implement a variety of educational software
- Required: A bilingual (Spanish-English) speaker, writer, reader, and listener
- Required: At least two (2) years experience as an ENL teacher in a K-12 setting.
What You’ll Do
- Oversee and support Bilingual/Dual Language Program instructional implementation and ENL classroom instruction
- Provide instructional coaching and feedback to teachers on lessons and assessments that reflect the instructional needs of MLL/ELL scholars at all DPNY schools
- Provide professional development for teachers, school leaders, and members of the DPPS community on best practices in dual language and MLL/ELL instruction, intervention, strategies, and resources to support students with limited English proficiency
- Partner with schools and school leadership to develop and implement ELPs (English learner plans) for all MLL/ELL scholars, including SIFEs and Newcomers
- Analyze data on MLL/ELL scholars and scholars receiving bilingual and dual language instruction to drive instructional decisions
- Support with the enrollment process of new MLL/ELL scholars to ensure they receive proper programming and support
- Support with exam and material translation for MLL/ELL scholars
- Coordinate with ELL Coordinators on MLL/ELL exam administration
Compensation
Salary is $80,000-$95,000 and commensurate with your experience. Salary range is competitive and commensurate with your experience.
