Job Description
The Technology Implementation Researcher I will lead the planning and execution of the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute’s (VTTI) multi-partner smart communities, connected and automated vehicle deployment, and associated programs in the Northern Virginia region. The position will align personnel across VTTI and key partner organizations towards accomplishing the strategic and programmatic goals of these efforts. This position will be required to effectively communicate objectives, decisively resolve critical issues, align technical resources to work tasks, and coordinate the execution of the program. This position will be embedded within key partner teams to ensure a high-level of technical expertise to support those organizations and the communities in which they serve. This position may require the supervision of faculty, staff, and/or students as determined by the Division Director in support of VTTI’s mission.
This position requires a qualified professional with proven aptitude for managing highly technical intelligent transportation system (ITS) installation, configuration of hardware and software, capable of conducting system testing, validation and troubleshooting as well as implementing data analytics and machine learning algorithms to ensure reliable performance and system efficiency. Further, the position will require liaising between multi-partner consortium or affiliated partner programs. The position will be heavily involved in ensuring regulatory compliance and performance monitoring.
Duties and Responsibilities: • Assists in the selection, development, integration, and deployment of smart cities-related technologies, systems, and components. • Educates sponsors on technologies and implementation issues through direct interaction in meetings, presentations, and documentation. • Performs work that involves developing innovative and creative solutions to complex engineering challenges with the goal of advancing the field of transportation mobility, efficiency and safety. • Supports the program teams and sponsors to define project goals and technical specifications; creates/refines project plans and milestones; and integrates these goals, specifications and timelines to achieve the overall objective. • Lead and manage ITS projects from concept to deployment, coordinating with cross-functional teams, and developing project plans, timelines and budgets. • Collaborate with government agencies, community organizations, and private sector partners to align project goals and objectives and secure necessary approvals.
Directions given and received • Receives direction from and collaborates directly with the Director of the Division for Technology Implementation at VTTI. • Works closely with partner team organizations and receives direction from their team leads to ensure close collaboration and effective technical implementation throughout the program. • Independently performs most assignments with instructions on global objectives and general results expected with minimal supervision. • Receives technical guidance on unusual or complex problems and work is reviewed for application of sound professional judgment. • May work with technicians, graduate research assistants and others who assist in specific assignments.
Position will require a criminal conviction check and involves working outside in uneven terrain as well as the use of protective equipment.
Required Qualifications
• M.B.A or M.S. degree in a technical field (Electrical, Mechanical, Industrial, or Computer Engineering or comparable field), with significant program management experience. • Demonstrated experience in transportation and mobility sector. • Understanding of traffic signal systems, advanced communications technologies, and other smart cities technologies • Project Management experience, qualified to lead project teams and oversee project schedule, budgets, and deliverables. • Firm understanding of engineering principles needed to analyze, verify, and interpret technology and safety research. • Must have a strong work ethic and be able to work independently with some supervision. • Strong organizational skills. • Demonstrated ability to plan and direct the work of others • Demonstrated interpersonal and communications skills.
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience in or familiarity with smart cities technologies and/or advanced transportation technologies such as automated vehicles, connected vehicles. • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification
