The City of Oxnard Public Works Department is seeking a Senior Survey Technician with strong technical and customer service skills to be part of the Engineering team. The ideal candidate will have knowledge of policies and procedures related to the land surveying, construction, design, and maintenance of public works systems and facilities.
WHAT YOU'LL DO:
Technician is responsible for performing a combination of the following essential job functions: operates reflective prism pole, leveling rod, and self-reading rods for vertical control, construction and topographic surveys; takes measurement readings while maintaining proper tape tension and plumbing with a plumb bob over survey points;
Provides mathematical checks of measured angles, electronic slope measurement reduction or slope chain reduction to horizontal distances, angle conversions to bearings, and prorations correcting measured lines or angles;
Records and checks the accuracy of measured distances by keeping peg notes; expedites survey progress by selecting suitable instrument locations and setting up survey instruments; prepares and sets survey markers and construction stakes indicating offset, cut and fill data, elevations, stationing, slope stake information and position location; sets and plumbs foresight and backsight targets for transit lines; performs field maintenance of survey tools and equipment; clears brush and other obstacles for line of sight for the survey;
Loads the appropriate equipment and supplies into survey vehicle to conduct the day's survey work; drives a survey vehicle to various locations
Ability to operate levels, electronic calculators, electronic distance measuring devices, electronic data collectors, total stations, GNSS equipment and other precision instruments.
Assists in the establishment and setting of survey monuments; stocks, cleans, and maintains vehicle
Performs survey assignments such as data collection for design surveys; performs plan interpretation and calculations for construction staking; performs preparation of field notes for documentation of surveying activities.
Demonstrate a full understanding of applicable policies, engineering procedures and work methods associated with assigned duties
Conduct Computer Aided Design(CAD) drafting and computing operations in the preparation of a wide variety of engineering drawings and plans
Calculate vertical and horizontal alignments for surveyors
Maintain computer programs for various types of drawings and project information
Develop and modifies computer programs required to provide graphics, maps, and for engineering drawings
Research files for existing plans, profiles, and maps for data for proposed projects
Respond to inquiries from contractors, other agencies and public regarding city requirements and construction projects; provides information as is appropriate and resolves complaints
Make field checks of project sites as needed; assists with field survey work; performs title searches, research right-of-way and easements based on legal descriptions
Interpret and draft legal description drawings; prepares sketches of designs from instructions and design data; interprets and converts survey notes to various types of drawings

SUPERVISION RECEIVED/SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
As assigned, incumbents supervise paraprofessional, technical and support staff including conducting performance evaluations, coordinating training, and implementing hiring, discipline and termination procedures. Receives general supervision on routine items which are performed according to established standards and procedures and receives specific work instruction regarding non-routine matters and deadlines.

This classification is distinguished from the Engineering Technician in that it provides specialized and advanced technical work in support of engineering function and provides oversight, training and supervision of Engineering Technician staff and activities.

Employees are required to participate in the City's direct deposit plan and are paid on a bi-weekly basis.
This position requires a 12 month probationary period.
