DISABLED STUDENT SERVICES ASSISTANT
WELCOME TO SANTA MONICA COLLEGE! Thank you for your interest in joining the SMC team as a Disabled Student Services Assistant. This position performs general clerical and receptionist duties for the Center for Students with Disabilities, in addition to a variety of support services to assist students with disabilities, including proctoring, notetaking, and preparing alternate instructional media. This position is scheduled to work Monday through Friday, 40 hours per week, 12 months per year with a variable shift, compensated at 5% above the base salary.
What You Will Bring to the College The ideal candidate will be able to build rapport with students and faculty, demonstrate understanding of students with disabilities in a college environment, be knowledgeable of regulations governing students with disabilities, possess experience providing information and services to students with disabilities, including note-taking, exam proctoring, and attending to the front desk. The incumbent will possess a high degree of attention to detail, provide exceptional customer service, be adaptable, maintain collaborative relations, work in a team environment, be proficient with office systems including Microsoft Office, and to effectively communicate and explain information to others, both orally and in writing.

Salary Placement New Employees: Generally, new employees start at the first step on the salary schedule. A new permanent classified employee may request a higher salary placement based on recruitment issues and/or additional training and experience which greatly exceeds the minimum requirements. Please note that salary placement above the third step requires additional approvals by Santa Monica College executive staff.
Current Employees: Upon promotion, the new salary for a current, permanent employee is based on Merit Rule 12.2.7. In accordance with this rule, employees are entitled to at least a one-step (5%) salary increase, and may be eligible for advanced step placement in accordance with established criteria.
About the Selection Process The selection process will consist of a Scored Training and Experience Evaluation (Pass/Fail), (click here for more information on the training & experience evaluation process), a Written Exam (Pass/Fail), a Performance Exam (Pass/Fail), and a Qualifications Appraisal Interview (weighted 100%). All candidates who meet the minimum qualifications and pass the Training and Experience Evaluation, Written Exam and the Performance Exam will advance to the Qualifications Appraisal Interview (weighted at 100%). Candidates must be successful on the Qualifications Appraisal Interview with a score of 70.00 or better for their name to appear on the eligibility list.
Two separate eligibility lists will be created from this recruitment: one for promotional candidates and one for external candidates. The promotional list will be used first, and must be exhausted before we can hire external candidates to fill vacant positions. The eligibility lists created from this recruitment will be used to fill any vacancies that occur during the one year life of the eligibility list, including permanent and temporary positions. Santa Monica College reserves the right to modify the stated test components and weights prior to the administration of any test.

Examples of Duties
Assists a student with disabilities in activities such as scribing in-class assignments, adjusting equipment, reading assignments or exams to students, and providing access to books.
Performs general receptionist and clerical duties to support day to day operations of the Department.
Proctors exams and works in the proctor room, including monitoring students; observing, appropriately responding to, and reporting inappropriate behavior such as cheating; record-keeping; and other related duties. Explains and interprets procedures and eligibility requirements for program services to students, staff, and the public.
Instructs students in the correct procedure to complete application forms and documents.
Operates a computer terminal to input and update student data and verify student information.
Maintains the security of files and records containing confidential data on program participants.
Takes accurate and detailed notes in a college class for students with disabilities.
Receives and reviews incoming documents for completeness and accuracy.
Schedules appointments for students with counselors and/or other office support staff.
Assists in the preparation of mandated reports and documents.
Performs other related duties as requested or assigned.
When assigned to assist the Alternate Media Specialist:
Prepares and/or modifies alternative media from instructor's copy which accommodate students with disabilities, using specialized computer-aided software.
Captions videos.
Scans books and handouts.
Uses copy machine to enlarge printed material.
Assists in providing printed material in alternate media for use by students with disabilities.
Examples of essential duties are descriptive and not restrictive in nature, and are generally listed in descending order of importance.
Minimum Qualifications
Education Requirement: A high-school diploma or equivalent. Completion of college-level English classes (English 1 or equivalent) is highly desirable. Experience Requirement: One year of experience in academic or administrative support services. Customer service experience with direct public contact is highly desirable. Education/Experience Equivalency: Experience and/or education of the same kind, level and amount as required in the minimum qualifications may be substituted on a year-for-year basis. Licensure and/or Certification: None. Special Requirement: Scheduling is based upon student needs, so incumbents must be available for various days and hours as schedules may change from week to week. Classes are held at various locations and the employee may be required to report or travel to any of the Santa Monica College campuses.
