The Elliott School’s Office of Undergraduate Academic Advising provides advising services to approximately 1,800 undergraduate students majoring in International Affairs, Asian Studies, Middle East Studies, and Latin American and Hemispheric Studies. Through individual and group advising, workshops, and programs, the Undergraduate Academic Advising Office empowers students to develop goals, navigate academic programs, utilize available resources, and explore the field of international affairs. The undergraduate academic advising team includes general advisors, senior advisors, two assistant directors, one director, and an administrative coordinator who work in a highly collaborative and supportive work environment.
The Senior Academic Advisor will report to the Assistant Director or Director of Undergraduate Academic Advising.
Primary Responsibilities include: - Academic Advising caseload: Advise Elliott students from orientation through graduation; facilitate remote summer orientation and advising through webinar, video, and phone contact; monitor undergraduate student progress through individual in-person meetings and on-going email/video/phone communication to review program requirements and opportunities; conduct outreach to probation students and students with Incomplete and Z grades; audit degree progress and completion, including rising senior reviews and graduation clearances.
- Serve as liaison to one or more academic departments or student service units; participate in a committee, project group, or working group addressing issues in new student orientation, the student experience, curriculum, graduation, or advising operations.
Specialty Areas and Projects may include: - Senior Year Student Programming: Serve on the University and Elliott School Commencement planning committee; propose and execute programming for senior year students in collaboration with the Senior Year Experience team; identify students with Elliott School Special Honors for graduation clearances.
- Graduate School Resources and Programming: Oversee undergraduate advising efforts and procedures needed to support the Elliott School combined degree program; propose and execute programming, workshops and small group advising in the area of graduate school; create and maintain graduate school and law school communications and resource guides; cross-train academic advisors in graduate school advising and support.
- International Student Programming and Study Abroad: Develop programming and advising strategies targeting international students; serve as liaison with International Student Services Office and Office for Study Abroad; serve as advising point of contact for Global Bachelor’s.
- First Year Experience Programming: Oversee first year orientation webinars; Manage the Peer Advisor program, including recruiting, hiring, training and supervising the Peer Advisor program (supervision can be split with other interested team members); Attend Orientation committee meetings, assist with other first year related projects as needed; Work closely with AD for First Year Experience, as well as one other team member as part of the first year experience team; first generation programming.
- Academic Standing and Student Success: After fall and spring semesters, review student records up for probation and suspension; Lead the suspension review committee; Communicate with team on academic standing review, share lists of students; Oversee all academic standing communications in collaboration with the Director, including Dean’s list and those students who come off of probation and into good standing.
- Programming and administration for other special student populations
