JOB SUMMARY
Under supervision to perform the full range of lifeguard and instructor duties from providing for the safety of persons using the swimming pool to overseeing recreational activities and routine maintenance; and to perform related work as required.
This is the first working level in the lifeguard series; prevents accidents through the enforcement of policies, rules and regulations governing the conduct of persons at the swimming pool; keeps attentive lookout for accidents in the water or on a diving board or swimming pool deck; warns people against dangerous practices regarding pool use; enters the water to rescue people in distress; administers artificial respiration and first aid and calls for emergency response on serious accident cases; assists with routine pool cleaning and maintenance work on or about the swimming pool as required; may open the facility and supervise pool operations; assists in supervising special swim events; may be required to work weekends, evenings, and/or holidays.
Lifeguard:Possession of a valid American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certificate (or Ellis Lifesaving or YMCA Lifesaving Certificate); First Aid for the Professional Rescuer Certificate; CPR Certificate; and Title 22 Certificate.
Training and Experience: Any combination of training and experience which would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Work Background: One to Two years of prior experience as instructor, coach, or lifeguard. Some experience in organizing or conducting recreational programs with experience in aquatics is desirable.
KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES:
Knowledge of principles and practices of water safety, rescue methods, lifesaving techniques, and first aid as applied to accidents in the water and surrounding pool areas.
Ability to swim with proficiency and endurance and meet City-established standards of swimming competency.
Ability to apply lifesaving techniques and first aid.
Ability to lift victim from water and assistance (approximately 30 to 200 pounds).
Ability to prevent dangerous situations from arising, to recognize emergencies, and to take appropriate action.
Ability to exercise sound judgment in a variety of situations.
Ability to effectively enforce water safety rules.
Ability to interact effectively with a wide variety of people of differing personalities and temperaments.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school district personnel, coworkers, and the public.
Ability to withstand exposure to sun and water for up to 8 hours a day.
Ability to complete and maintain accurate records and reports.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.
Ability to assist with swim lessons or in-water aquatics programs.
