UCLA Lab School, part of the School of Education & Information Studies, is an innovative school committed to research-based education for an ethnically, linguistically, socially, and economically diverse student body of approximately 450 students, ages 4-12. Under the direction of the Director of Curriculum for Social Emotional Learning (SEL) and Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI), the Social and Emotional Learning Student Support Coordinator assists with the implementation and support of the Safe School approach. The Safe School approach, developed by UCLA Lab School faculty and School of Education and Information Studies researchers, is a school-wide system for maintaining a safe and nurturing environment that promotes learning. The Safe School approach is not a discipline program, but rather, articulates and reinforces our values as a community. The goal is for students to build a set of internal, lifelong strategies for working with each other and solving problems. The Social and Emotional Learning Student Support will:
• Support the school’s Safe School approach through direct services to students and staff;
• Consult with teachers, parents, administration, and outside professionals regarding the individual needs of students and prescribe appropriate supports;
• Facilitate and/or direct one-on-one or small group support to students;
• Facilitate staff training and workshops to support our Safe School approach and keep accurate documentation of sessions, meetings, and other communications appropriate to ethical and professional standards;
• Communicate with parents in-person, over the phone, online, via email, and/or in writing regarding incidents, conversations, and other student situations that fall under the purview of Safe School;
• Collect data, monitor student and program progress;
• Support Demonstration Teachers in developing curriculum that supports safe school lessons and incorporating safe school approaches in ongoing classroom curriculum;
• Develop professional development trainings for Demonstration Teachers around Safe School teachings and processes;
• Support Demonstration Teachers in teaching socio-emotional lessons in classrooms as well as engage in conflict resolution conversations for new Demonstration Teachers.
• Meet with students, Demonstration Teachers, TAs, and other classroom staff regarding situations that fall under the purview of Safe School to mediate conversations to seek resolution;
• Assist the Director of Curriculum in designing and facilitating professional learning for staff, instructors, and families in Safe School and Social and Emotional Learning;
• Co-facilitate Safe School and Social and Emotional Learning lessons with Demonstration Teachers in the classroom;
• Participate on school committees to committed to developing Safe School curriculum;
• Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
• A Master’s degree or equivalent
• Three to five (3-5) years of student support experience
