Job Summary
Responsible for operating the scales at the County transfer station, collecting fees, ensures compliance with County operating policies, and maintains daily logs and records.

Job Functions
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Meets all incoming transfer station customers and inspects incoming loads to ensure materials are acceptable
Provides information to customers regarding County solid waste disposal policies, and recycling
Operates scales, collects fees and/or post charges to appropriate accounts
Monitors use of the convenience center and compliance with County policies
Supervises Community Service Workers
Enters data into automated information systems; prepares and maintains a variety of records pertaining to daily operations, such as number of vehicles entering landfill, use of dumpsters and recycling containers, etc.
Prepares print outs of daily transactions and backs up data on discs
Monitors use of the dumpster outside the landfill gate, and ensures dumpsters are only used for household trash
Pull and empty dumpsters when full
Clears weekly accumulators into monthly figures
NON-ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Performs general and preventive maintenance
Serves as the convenience center attendant as needed
Qualifications
Education and Experience: Education equivalent to a high school diploma supplemented by 2 years of experience performing data entry and retrieval.
Special Qualifications: Must possess satisfactory results of a criminal history background check. Must possess and maintain a valid Virginia driver’s license and Virginia Class B commercial driver’s license; Solid Waste Management Facility Operator’s license, preferred. Weekend work required. OSHA Industrial safety training required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of transfer scale operations, to include knowledge of prohibited disposal practices
Skilled in operating the transfer station scale
Ability to operate office equipment such as computer, fax, phone, etc.
General knowledge of the safety practices applicable to the transfer station operations
Ability to perform medium physical work
Ability to follow safety procedures
Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team environment
Ability to provide the highest level of customer service
Working Conditions & Disclaimer
PHYSICAL DEMANDS This position classifies the physical exertion requirements as moderate, occasionally lifting up to 25 pounds. Tasks may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing, reaching, sitting, moving and/or pulling of objects and materials etc. Requires the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Requires the ability to communicate orally. Requires ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT Essential functions are regularly performed at the County transfer station. Frequent exposure to outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
