The City Manager’s Office provides oversight and direction to ensure that all City departments are responding to City Council goals, keeping up-to-date on the changing needs of the community, and planning the services, programs, and projects that will ensure the City is a great community in which to live, work, and play.
The City Manager's Office manages city properties and capital improvement projects and is the focal point for economic development and community relations. Responsibilities of the City Manager's Office include: Cable Television, Citizen Assistance, Community Relations, Economic Development, Emergency Preparedness, Labor Relations, Film Permits, Legislative Affairs, Special Events Review, Torrance Strategic Plan, and Volunteer Program.
The Position
Under the leadership of the Emergency Services Manager, the Staff Assistant/Emergency Services Assistant coordinates the daily operations and activities of the City's emergency preparedness, response, and recovery programs. These programs are actively engaged with community groups and are designed to increase emergency preparedness throughout the community.
This position provides support for grant applications, monitors the budget, and works closely with City staff to ensure the operational readiness of the City's disaster preparedness plan. The Staff Assistant/Emergency Services Assistant also prepares agenda items and organizes and delivers presentations on disaster preparedness to the community and City staff.
This position has a defined structure of work, training is provided and systems are in place to monitor work progress.

QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES
Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:
Graduation from high school or equivalent and four (4) years of highly responsible executive support and/or administrative work in a public agency; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience such as an Associate's degree in Public or Business Administration or a related field and two (2) years of related experience; or a Bachelor's degree in Public Administration, Business Administration or a related field.
Successful candidates will possess the following:
Demonstrated data management and problem-solving skills.
Highly organized with strong oral and written communications skills.
Self-directed and able to offer creative solutions.
Ability to complete multiple priority assignments.
Technology savvy with solid proficiency in using Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
Experienced with spreadsheets/databases and creating correspondence and reports.
Strong attention to detail and familiarity with budget monitoring.
Work independently and as part of a team.
